The problem [01:00] When Amir started this project, the idea was simply to help users go from a set of planned meals to a grocery list. User research quickly showed the problem was more layered: people need a source of truth for their own recipes, they plan for a series of upcoming meals rather than one at a time, and that plan has to be checked against what's already in the pantry or fridge. The biggest complexity, though, was that the burden of this planning usually falls on one person, who has to juggle the preferences and constraints of every member of the family at once. What they built [04:20] Sherpa-K lets users interact through a CLI, SMS texts, and barcode scans of groceries; an orchestrating agent manages the pantry, fridge, and shopping list, plans meals, and tracks the state of the kitchen, including its recipes, planning history, and a grocery-item database used to identify scanned barcodes. In practice, it reads incoming SMS notes to sort what needs to be bought from which meal they belong to, accepts a photo of a recipe or a voice note describing groceries and adds them to its records, checks a shopping list against what's already on hand to avoid duplicate purchases, and processes barcodes and voice notes from a shopping trip to update inventory. It also surfaces two views for the household: a picture of who lives there along with their preferences, constraints, and current pantry/fridge/shopping-list contents, and on request it recommends what to add to the next shopping trip or proposes a full recipe, ingredients and cooking plan included, built entirely from what's already on hand. What happened [07:30] As a real test, when his household wanted Korean food one night, Amir asked Sherpa-K what could be made from what was already in the pantry and fridge; it proposed a 'Korean sloppy joe' with a full ingredient list and recipe, and he had dinner plated in 19 minutes using its recommendation as a starting point rather than following it to the letter.
